Preparing Your Home and Valuables for Move Day

Preparing Your Home and Valuables for Move Day

Oct 19, 2020

With moving day fast approaching, we know that the mental checklist has begun to ensure that everything has been taken care of. For a convenient and stress-free move, we developed a Guide to a Successful Move to help you prepare. Good planning, preparation and cooperation alleviate the pressure brought on by an upcoming move.

In regards to the packing tasks, most of our customers take a hybrid approach, with customers packing some of the home and our professional team of movers packing the fragile items (china, crystal and mirrors). All furniture is wrapped and secured in furniture pads while sofas and other high-value items are stretch wrapped by the moving team. Preventative measures are taken to protect the home and flooring during the move as well.

With all of the big items taken care of, what about the smaller items, such as jewelry or family heirlooms? As outlined in our Guide to a Successful move, all jewelry, watches and precious stones are not covered under your valuation (transit protection) policy. These items should be personally organized, packed and taken by you to your new home.

Some tips to prepare valuables for move day include:

Safeguard valuable pieces or family heirlooms in a travel jewelry roll.

Affordable options are available online in a variety of sizes and colors. Some jewelry organizers can be bulky, so choose a slim one that resembles a wallet or clutch. We recommend zipping the organizer inside of a travel carry-on bag for an extra layer of protection.

For costume jewelry, prevent necklaces and bracelets from getting tangled using Ziploc bags, straws and toilet rolls.

It might not look glamorous, but using these common household items is the best way to transport necklaces without tangling. If you’re going with Ziplocs bags or cloth pouches, use one for each necklace or bracelet and place all of them in a bigger one.

Do you have some straws on hand? Slip the chain through the straw and clip it together on the other side, then gently trim the straw as necessary. This method works great for delicate bracelets and necklaces. For larger pieces, use toilet paper or paper towel rolls. Whatever you choose, make sure to wrap in paper and store them in a spacious box.

For fun, costume earrings and rings, secure them with pill organizers and sheets of foam.

Earrings can fall through cracks, get crushed by heavy boxes or accidentally become misplaced in the throwaway pile. Here are three tried-and-true ways to keep them intact:

  • Sheets of foam. Pieces the earrings through the foam and secure with tape, especially if you have dangling jewelry with chains and beams. Wrap everything in multiple sheets of packing paper.
  • Business cards. All you need to do is poke holes through your cards and attach the earrings. One card can hold multiple pairs.
  • Pill organizers. These work wonders for moving small earrings, as well as rings.

A hard glasses case or an egg carton can also double as a ring case. Carefully put your rings in the individual egg holders and cover them with crumpled packing paper. Secure the carton with tape and place in a safe spot.
