Each year, Allied Van Lines creates a report on the “magnet states” attracting movers from across the U.S. Included in the report is a migration map, highlighting high inbound, high outbound and balanced states.
2020 was an unusual year in many ways, with the pandemic impacting the economy, businesses, home life, moving and location preferences. Across the United States, families and individuals continued to move, despite changes in opportunity or lifestyle, due to COVID-19.
As an Allied Van Lines agent, we are proud to share these findings to provide greater insight into moving trends.
2020 Overall Migration by State
While some states were popular destinations, others came at the top of the list for the opposite reason, as locations people were moving from during 2020.
The top inbound states included:
- Arizona
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- North Carolina
- Texas
The top outbound states were as follows:
- Illinois
- Michigan
- New Jersey
- California
- New York
Top Locations for Consumer Moves, 2020
Moving patterns differed, depending on whether those relocating were moving for work or for personal reasons.
The top destination states for consumer moves were as follows:
- Florida
- Texas
- California
- Arizona
- North Carolina
Austin, TX, held its spot as the most moved-to destination for consumers for the second year running. The top destination cities for consumer movers were:
- Austin, TX
- Denver, CO
- Chicago, IL
- Las Vegas, NV
- Houston, TX
Top Locations for Corporate Moves, 2020
Despite the pandemic, corporate moves also continued to take place.
The top destination states for corporate moves were:
- Texas
- California
- Illinois
- Florida
- North Carolina
Three of the five top most popular destination cities were in the #1 state of Texas, and Houston continues to claim the top spot for corporate moves, just as it did last year. The top destination cities for corporate moves in 2020 were:
- Houston, TX
- Chicago, IL
- Austin, TX
- Cupertino, CA
- Spring, TX
Allied Van Lines Charitable Achievements
The 2020 report also contains information on the charitable achievements of Allied Van Lines in partnership with Move for Hunger and the Salvation Army.
Allied Van Lines in Partnership with Move for Hunger
Thanks to the partnership between Move for Hunger and Allied Van Lines, more families across the United States had access to food:
- 1,149,260 lbs. of food was delivered to food banks across the US.
- This is the equivalent of 957,717 meals.
Allied Van Lines in Partnership with The Salvation Army
Allied Van Lines worked with The Salvation Army to coordinate donation pick-ups.
- 1,791 donation pick-ups were successfully completed thanks to this partnership.
- Donations were taken to local Salvation Army Stores.
