Piano Movers in San Diego Since 1925

Moving pianos is how Atlas got started. In 1925, Atlas Moving Company opened in San Diego to move pianos for local families and piano stores. A century later, our trained handlers still move uprights, baby grands and concert grands across San Diego County and the country. We’ve moved concert grand pianos and even sets for the San Diego Opera.

    Why Piano Moving Takes Specialists

A piano can weigh anywhere from about 300 lbs (a small upright) to over 1,000 lbs (a concert grand), and that weight sits unevenly over a delicate cabinet, legs, pedals and tens of thousands of precision parts. General movers who “also do pianos” risk cracked legs or lyres, scratched or split finishes, and damage to your floors, walls and stair railings. They also risk injury to the crew or to you, and shifts in transit that knock the piano badly out of regulation.

Our piano handlers have the training, equipment and experience to move your instrument safely in any conditions.

    How We Move Your Piano

    1. Assessment. We note the piano’s type, size and weight, plus stairs, turns, doorways and floor surfaces at both locations.
    2. Protection. We pad-wrap every piano to protect the finish. Grands have their legs, pedal lyre and lid removed and secured.
    3. Specialized equipment. Grand pianos are strapped to a padded piano skid board. Uprights ride on heavy-duty piano dollies.
    4. Careful transport. The piano is strapped to the truck wall (grands stay on their skid board) so it can’t shift in transit.
    5. Placement. We reassemble it and place it exactly where you want it.
    6. Tuning. We recommend a tuning 2–3 weeks after the move, once the piano adjusts to its new room.

Pianos and Keyboard Instruments We Move

We move every kind of upright piano, from spinets and consoles to studio and full uprights, and every size of grand, from baby grands and parlor grands to living room and concert grands. We also handle digital pianos, organs, harpsichords and other large keyboard instruments.

Antique and heirloom pianos get extra care, including antique moving techniques and custom crating when an instrument needs more protection than pad-wrapping alone.

    Stairs, Hillsides and Tight Spaces

San Diego homes aren’t always piano-friendly. There are split-levels in Clairemont, hillside homes in La Jolla and Point Loma, and walk-ups in North Park. Our crews regularly move pianos up and down stairs and through tight turns, using the same specialty item moving methods we rely on for other heavy, fragile pieces. One customer said we moved their piano “from upstairs to downstairs without a scratch.” Tell us about access when you request your quote, and we’ll plan the right crew size and equipment.

Piano Storage and Long-Distance Piano Moving

Wood and felt don’t like humidity swings. Our climate-controlled household storage in Poway keeps your piano stable while you remodel, stage a home or wait on a closing. For high-value or antique instruments, we build custom crates for extra protection.

Moving farther? We ship pianos anywhere in California with our intrastate movers and anywhere in the U.S. with our interstate movers, through the Allied Van Lines network. Our long-distance moving overview explains how it works. And if it’s just the piano, with no full move, our small moves and specialty shipment program handles it.

A Piano Moving Company With a 100-Year Track Record

Atlas started in 1925 with a simple job: moving pianos for San Diego families and local piano stores. After World War II we moved military households into and out of San Diego, and in 1948 we became an agent for Allied Van Lines. Today we’re led by second-generation owner Tom Oakley, who has more than 40 years in the industry.

    Piano Moving FAQs

    Answers

How much does it cost to move a piano in San Diego?

Piano moving cost depends on the piano type and size (upright vs. grand), stairs and tight turns, distance, and whether the piano needs storage or crating. A ground-floor upright moved across town costs less than a grand piano going up a flight of stairs. Call us with the details for a free quote.

Can you move a piano up or down stairs?

Yes. Our crews move pianos on stairs regularly using piano boards, straps and extra crew members for safety. Tell us the number of steps, any landings or turns, and whether the stairs are inside or outside. That way we send the right team and equipment.

Should I tune my piano after moving it?

Yes. Moving, and especially the change in temperature and humidity, affects tuning. Most technicians recommend waiting 2–3 weeks after the move so the piano can adjust to its new room, then tuning it. We coordinate with you and your piano technician on any preparation before the move.

    Do you move grand pianos?

Yes. We move baby grands, parlor grands and concert grands. For a grand, we remove the legs, pedal lyre and lid, pad-wrap the body and secure it on its side on a padded piano skid board. Then we reassemble it at the destination.

    Can you store my piano?

Yes. Our climate-controlled Poway warehouse is a safe place to store a piano during a remodel, home sale or long-distance move. Stable temperature and humidity protect the wood, soundboard and felts. We can pick up, store and deliver your piano on your schedule.

Can you move just my piano, without a full household move?

Yes. Piano-only moves are common, whether you're buying a piano, giving one to family or moving it to another room or floor. Our small moves and specialty shipment program handles single-item moves across town or across the country.
